Kitsch Indulgence in Islamorada

Each of the Florida Keys, connected by 42 bridges over which US Highway 1 runs, has its own charm and attractions. A visit to Miami without at least a foray into the world of the keys is simply not complete. And, as with trips to any place in the world, the visitor wants to take some memories and souvenirs home, to relive the experience. Pictures are great, but some tangible mementos, which can also make fabulous gifts are always welcome.

islamiamiipqa800Well, let me tell you, the Florida Keys are souvenir shopping heaven! Many of the items on display can only be classified as “pure Kitsch”, but, Kitsch is an art form too, so I find nothing wrong with it. Particulalrly not, if the colors and materials used are so pretty and vivid and just evoke images of sand, beach, sun, ocean and freedom, even when contemplated in a snow covered place in a cold country in the dead of winter.

I got my fill at the Shell Shack in Islamorada. You can buy single shells in all shapes, colors and sizes, rummaging through big boxes and costing $1 each. Or else you will find ceramic frogs, forged and painted sun faces, stars, fish, boxes, and any other conceivable object made from or decorated with shells. From corkscrews to garden objects, pillow cases and jewelery boxes, bracelets and necklaces, the choice is huge, the prices are modest and there is bound to be at least one pretty souvenir for every taste.
