Celebrate Colorado’s History

Delta County, Colo. (June 30, 2009) – Colorado history and heritage are on
full and colorful display this fall at the 15th Annual Council Tree Pow Wow and
Cultural Festival at Confluence Park in Delta County, Colo., and you’re invited
to join in the fun. The festivities kick-off on Friday, Sept. 18 and run through
Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009.

Throughout this three-day celebration, attendees can watch the brightly-
colored dancers and listen to the mesmerizing singing competitions; browse
and mingle among the American Indian artisans’ craft booths; taste authentic
American Indian foods; and tour a real tipi in the Tipi Village, which offers
guided and self-guided tour where you can learn tipi etiquette, including how
to properly enter a tipi.

The creation of the Council Tree Pow Wow and Cultural Festival 15 years ago
was the first project in which the three historic Ute Tribes joined together
since leaving the Delta area more than 100 years ago. The event grows each
year and continues to bring both Native Americans and non-Native Americans
together to celebrate life, as well as sing, dance, and honor the American
Indian culture.

Friday kicks off with the “Celebration of the Ute Nation,” including
presentations on dance, history, Ute traditions, and everyone’s participation
in the Ute Bear Dance.

On Saturday, the Children’s Cultural Center is open for youngsters to learn
from Ute craftspeople the skills of American Indian artistry. Free with the cost
of admission, and with the registration of a parent, children have the
opportunity to try their hand at making medicine bags or beaded necklaces or
painting pottery.

The weekend-long celebration continues through Sunday with an awards
presentation for the dancing and singing competitions, wrapping up the
ceremonies in the late afternoon.

The event is not only fun for all, but is also affordable. Adults pay only $6
per day (or $18 for a three-day pass). Children ages 6-12 get in for only $3
per day, and admission is free for kids under age six. Visitors should note
that pets and alcohol are not allowed, and cameras (including camera
phones) must be registered at the entrance of the Pow Wow grounds.

Delta County, Colo., is located on Colorado’s western slope at the base of
Grand Mesa, one of the largest flat top mountains in the world. An
agricultural and heritage hotbed, this region is home to the communities of
Cedaredge, Crawford, Delta, Eckert, Hotchkiss, Orchard City and Paonia.
